I found my muse shooting jpgs
I can't believe I'm saying this. Can you? I mean what the ... I'm a raw evangelist! I've been shooting raw files for 10 years. Jpgs suck, right?
But then I got my Lumix GH3
The Panasonic Lumix GH3 is my new mirrorless camera. It shoots raw files, jpgs and full auto focus video which my dSLR can't do. And in video mode you can shoot stills at the same time which my dSLR also can't do. Fantastic!
I'm conservative by nature
I'm a pretty conservative shooter. That's because my background is corporate photography. And in corporate photography things need to look clean and pretty, especially when shooting for the energy sector, like I did. You need to give the right impression to the public. Clean, nonpolluting, industrial settings. So you need to use great photographic design, lighting and colour really well. A perfect place to shoot raw files.
So, why did I start shooting jpgs?
I just released a new online course called Point Shoot Wow. In that course I teach people how to get the most out of their point and shoot cameras without getting too technical. I want people to have fun taking pictures, but I also want them to get the best photos possible out of their cameras.But in order to teach a course like this, I had to unlearn 30 years of professional photography and think like a beginner with a point and shoot camera.
So, I looked under the hood
Wow, was I happy I did that! The GH3 is full of features that give artsy effects to your photos and videos. It's like Snapseed built right into the camera. And the fact that these features work with video is a total bonus! (I'm especially fond of the Impressive Art setting.)
Shooting jpgs has freed me from the confines of raw files
Yup you heard that right: Confines
I'm no longer stuck shooting boring old raw files that are perfectly white balanced, perfectly tweaked and perfectly exported.
I am a changed person
I can experiment with in camera effects instead and not spend hours trying to achieve the same results in Photoshop. That's a time saver and it makes shooting a whole lot more fun knowing that what I see is what I got! Yes, past tense I "got it" in camera.

- Yippee!
