Sizing and Pixel dimensions for common print sizes

You can use the techniques shown in the video to prepare your files for photo lab or home printing. The problem is, you don’t always know what size to make the files. Here is a handy list of some common sizes and the pixel dimensions that will work.

  • 4×6 inch = in the range of 1200 to 1800 pixels on the long side of your image
  • 5×7 inch = in the range of 1400 to 2100 pixels on the long side of your image
  • 8×10 inch = in the range of 2000 to 3000 pixels on the long side of your image
  • 11×14 inch = in the range of 2800 to 4200 pixels on the long side of your image
  • 16×20 inch = in the range of 4000 to 6000 pixels on the long side of your image (12+ MP camera)

If you know you'll be making large prints of your work, then make sure you set up your picture size in the camera to accomodate that larger print size too.

Upsizing

If you upsize your photos too much, they will look blurry. So make sure if you want to print your photos large that you start with a large file.
